"Don't get me wrong, I still believe in the afterlife, but too often all the church has done is promise the world that there is life after death and use it as a ticket to ignore the hells around us. I am convinced that the Christian Gospel has as much to do with this life as the next, and that the message of that Gospel is not just about going up when we die but about bringing God's Kingdom down. It was Jesus who taught us to pray that God's will be done 'on earth as it is in heaven.' On Earth."                           - Shane Claiborne

It's been described as, "being the hands and feet of Christ," "being in mission to our neighbors in need," or "being Jesus with skin on." We like to call it "being ONE." While Jesus was praying, he said these words: "The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one." John 17:22-23

The truth is, we're all connected. To each other, to this planet we all live on, to God, and even to those who have passed on before us. In the Christian tradition many before us experienced God though a beautiful image of how a mysterious connection exists between God the Creator, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It's the idea that between and within them is a beautiful relationship where all the attributes of God dwell: unconditional love, mercy, kindness, compassion, generosity, peace, patience... the list goes on.

Here's why knowing this is so important: we are invited to participate in it. We too are connected to this mysterious metephor.  Which means that when we practice the same attributes, we are in fact reflecting to the world what God is like. And when we join together with God to do this, we are "being ONE." The main characteristic of On Earth is that we strive in every way to actively be ONE. It's one of the ways we can live into Jesus' prayer, "your kingdom come, your will be done, On Earth as it is in heaven. The following are dreams of how On Earth could work at "being ONE" together.

  • What if we made it our goal that every child within a (choose a mile or block radius) had the school supplies they needed for the school year, went to bed at night with food in their stomachs, had their very own pillow to sleep on and own bed to sleep in?

  • What if we made it our goal to help (pick a location) have access to clean drinking water?

  • What if we adopted the (number of blocks) around our building?

  • What if we purchased an abandoned home in our neighborhood, fixed it up and used it to provide resources to our neighbors?

  • What if we collected dog food and other pet supplies for our neighbors who were battling illness, because money is too tight to adequately care for their pets?

  • What if we worked together to turn polluted, destroyed, and abandoned properties into beautiful gardens, nature paths, and bird sanctuaries?

  • What if we invited our neighbors of other faith traditions to join with us as a means of building bridges of love, tolerance, understanding, and respect?

  • What if we invested in the lives of those living in third world countries by participating in microfinance organizations like Kiva and Oikocredit?

  • What if we were intentional about bringing the message of the documentary I Am to life? See movie trailer below.
